The Institute has been conducting a PhD Programme (Medical Sciences) since its inception in various specialities relating to Chest Diseases, e.g., Allergy and Immunology, Bacteriology, Respiratory Medicine, Mycology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Virology, etc. Besides this, the Institute conducts MD courses in Pulmonary Medicine, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Physiology. It also conducts a Diploma course in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (DTCD).

The main activities of the Institute include Research and Postgraduate teaching in Chest Diseases and to provide diagnostic service and clinical consultation to out-patients referred to it by various hospitals in the country. It has an in-patient facility for clinical and laboratory evaluation of cases posing a diagnostic challenge and for treatment. The development of new diagnostic technology and its dissemination has been another important activity of VPCI.
