Animal House

The main function of the Animal House centres around the objectives to supply adequate number of good quality (genetically and pathogen free) animals, which is essential for obtaining reliable and reproducible experimental result in research. Different species and pathogen free animals are bred in the Institute Animal House.

Institute Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) keeps a check to promote the humane approach of animal experimentation with the basic objective of providing specifications that will enhance animal care and quality in the pursuit of advancement of scientific knowledge that is relevant to humans and animals.

The Animal House of the Institute is registered for Breeding and Experiments on animals with Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA), Animal Welfare Division, and Government of India.

The Animal House is completely renovated and upgraded to provide optimum environment for experimental animals and to meet international standards of animal experimental laboratories. Further, animal management will address ethical concern of the scientific community giving high priority to the welfare of laboratory animals and their judicious utilization.

Library

The VPCI Library is providing patient care information support and catering to the academic needs of the faculty members, resident doctors, researchers and students alike for research purposes. It forms a part of Institute support services and acquires thought process, collate and disseminates global information in the field of Biomedical Sciences with specialization in pulmonary diseases and allied sciences. The library started in 1955, but it has back volumes of several journals more than 100 years old. Most of the journals have complete sets of volumes originating right from their treatises of medicine which are readily available for basic and historical insights. It also has a very good comprehensive collection of serial publications like Annual Reviews, Years books, Recent advances.

The steady growth of the library can be gauged from the fact that initially, it was based in a single-room establishment, but subsequently, it expanded and presently is housed in accomadation covering entire floor of the Institute’s building. The present holdings of the library mainly consist of about 9869 Books and 18820 Volumes of bound journals besides containing 442 M.D. & Ph.D thesis, 110 CDs and 75 National and International Reports. A total of 96 Journals (91 International and 05 National) are being subscribed, 20 Journals are being received on exchange programme with the Institute's own Journal and 33 Journals (09 International and 24 National) are received on a complimentary basis. To cover the need for daily coverage of news related to the medical field, Library is also subscribing four English and two Hindi newspapers. This has encouraged the inculcation of reading habits of all alike.

Library, in addition to rendering services to the scientists/research scholars of the Institute provides a platform for other Colleges and Institute's of the University of Delhi towards access of library holdings via the University of Delhi website. The Library is also affiliated with DELNET (Developing Library Network) in accessing various databases like Union Catalogue of Books/Periodicals towards providing of relevant and concerned information timely. Emphasis is being encouraged to provide abstracts, references, CAS and SDI services. Delnet also provide access to DELNET Union Catalogues and other Databases of NLM, full text medical journals, MEDLINE database etc to Member-Libraries through ‘DelnetOnline’ and can be accessed by visiting site http://www.delnet.nic.in/ (please contact the library staff for login and password). Apart from this information, online searches can be initiated for providing instant access of Information Resources on the desktop of researchers through LAN (Local Area Network). The Internet access has been provided right on the desktop of each Faculty Member through LAN and ISDN connectivity with 128 KBPS line from 8.00 AM to 7.00 PM. Students have been provided with a separate room with five computers to access Internet Resources in the library. Library also provides inter-library loan facilities and reprographic services on demand.

Facilities:-

The Library facilities are available to Members/Users of Delhi University from Monday to Friday {8.30 AM to.7.00 PM}.

The Library follows an Open Access system. Library is equipped with modern information technology equipments and continues to provide Internet / Email services to the users to access Current Awareness Services (CAS) and SDI services. These are provided to the users in the form of online/offline through e-mail and print during the year. The library has 5 PCs with and 1 printer. The Library uses ‘Libsys 4.0’ software package, which is an integrated multi-user library management system that supports all in-house operations of the Library. The ‘Libsys’ consists of modules on acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, serials, article indexing and OPAC. Retrospective conversion of bibliographic records have been completed and can now be accessed through the Libsys OPAC (for Intranet only). The database of books and Journals available in the Library is being updated on day to day basis with details of recently acquired material. The library provides the following services:
1. Membership and Issue-Return services
2. Inter-Library Loan facility is available through DELNET.
3. Reference Services
4. Acquisition Services
5. Photocopying Services
6. Internet/online searching/e-mail services

All students, faculty members and employees of the Institute are eligible for acquiring membership of the Library. The registered members are issued Borrower's Ticket corresponding to their entitlements.

RULES AND REGULATIONS:

1. Only registered members are allowed to use the Library.

2. Registered members are issued a library membership card.

3. Readers should observe strict silence and switch off their mobile phones etc in the library premises.

4. Student membership is renewed at the beginning of each semester.

5. Readers’ tickets/library membership cards are non-transferable.

6. Books are normally issued for 15 days.

7. Bound volumes of Journals are issued for 15 days.

8. Loose Issues of Journals are issued only for overnight purposes and are to be returned the next working day.

9. Reference books are not issued out.

10. Theses are to be consulted within the library premises only. Theses cannot be xeroxed.

11. Borrowers must satisfy themselves with the physical condition of books before borrowing.

12. Members are responsible for books issued against their lost tickets.

13. Readers are not allowed to bring personal books or any printed material and other personal belongings like bags, umbrellas, etc. inside the library. These materials are to be kept at the Property Counter at their own risk. Readers’ are advised not to leave their precious and valuable items like money, passport, credit card etc. at the Property Counter.

14. Readers should not write in, mark or otherwise disfigure / damage books, furniture etc.

15. Library can recall any issued book even before the due date.

16. For loss of library tickets, readers have to deposit Rs. 500/- per ticket in the account section and submit the photocopy receipt in the library. Additionally, library security deposited by students (MD/DTCD/PhD) will also be forfeited for any lost/misplaced cards.

17. Any violation of these Rules shall lead to forfeiture of the membership of concerned member. Appropriate disciplinary action may also be imposed

18. A member must enter his / her name, address and time of entry and put his / her signatures legibly in the register kept at the entrance for the purpose as a token of his acceptance to abide by the rules.

19. Borrowers are requested for safe & careful use of Library documents and must ensure that the Library documents borrowed by them retained in sound condition. The borrower will be held responsible for any damage of the document(s) and he / she may have to replace the same or pay the damage as per rules
